A couple of weeks back, I could hear running water in my home, it was over a weekend. I looked every where and couldn’t figure out where it was coming from, finally I traced it to the top of the water heater, the hot water pipe was rattling and was really hot. So I callled servicing for the water heater, they told me to call a plumber. It turns out that we had a slab leak – I was hearing the running water through the water heater’s piping. I didn’t know who to call on a weekend, so I got the yellow pages out and just starting calling. I had other companies answering my call on a cell phone that dropped the call and I had to repeat myself when they called back, I tried a second company and I was transferred in to a voice mail, I called a third and was told that I needed to wait and call back Monday that weekends were extra (here I am with running water in my house under the slab!). On the 4th attempt at the yellow pages, I got the right company, Karla at AAA Auger in the DFW area listened to my distressed story and she assured me that everything would be fine and that they would be right out for no extra charges. Regarding your problem, it is possible the sewer line was installed without a clean-out. Typically, the clean-outs should exist within three feet of the dwelling. However, codes didn’t properly address this until the late 1970′s.
To address your other inquiry regarding access through the toilet, the answer is “maybe”. Specifically, it depends where the blockage exists in relation to the toilet’s location. You certainly are on the right track pursuing the installation of clean-outs.

Do you service Wise County (Runaway Bay/Bridgeport)? Bathrooms backed up in older home (1961). Cannot find cleanout drain; we think it’s buried. We’ve been told that you can pull up the toilet in the master bathroom and clean out the line through there. We’re interested in locating the cleanout or creating a new one, cleaning out the drain, and possibly replacing our water heater. Thanks.
